Online Advertising

Online advertising is an essential part of any online marketing mix and goes hand in hand with other marketing strategies such as search engine optimization (seo).

Online advertising primarily deals with paid advertising whose primary purpose is to drive traffic to your site directly rather than to increase your rankings in search engines.

Examples of online advertising include all manner of contextual and network Pay Per Click (PPC) programs such as Google’s AdWords, targeted banner advertising, email marketing, directories, blogs, forums, classified ads, and interstitial ads which is a fancy name for those “splash” ads that cover the whole screen to get your attention. The number of places and ways you can display your ads are almost infinite, however most online advertising programs take a few basic forms:

  • CPM – cost per 1,000 impressions (an impression is a page view).
  • CPC (also known as PPC advertising) – cost per click (pay per click advertising).
  • CPA – cost per acquisition, which can be any manner of acquisitions from a lead, sale, user interaction with an ad, or similar desirable action.
