What is PHP?

PHP hypertext processor is a programming language used for the creation of dynamic web pages. It's a "reflective language" that can process and execute serverside instructions in scripts (it is also open to being executed from a command line or in standalone applications).

PHP started as personal home page tools released by its author Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995. Its origin lies in a set of CGI binaries written in C. Israeli developers Suraski and Gutmans took PHP to the next level when they republished the parser in 1998 which with became php3. These same folks also formed Zend Technologies in 1998 which manages PHP's development.

The current release is PHP 5 which is powered by a revised rewrite of the PHP core called Zend Engine II which processes bytecode compiled by PHPs parser from scripts.

PHP is generally accepted as the P in "LAMP" architecture which deploys a secure, reliable, and inexpensive web server application (the LAM being Linux, Apache, and MySQL). Python and Perl could also qualify for the "P" in LAMP.

PHP and can be used with most operating systems and web servers. PHP also allows for a command line interface and several client-side GUI and text applications.
